Acoustic Guitar Reviews – Which Childrens Guitar Should I Buy?

The acoustic guitar is a very versatile instrument and there are various types you can choose from. But fear not, this is why we’re here. In this article, we’ll try to convey a few main points you should consider when buying a childrens guitar.
Comfort
First what type of acoustic guitar would your child feel most comfortable with starting? There are predominately two types of acoustic guitars: (a) the classic guitar, which has nylon strings, and (b) the steel-string guitar, which obviously has steel strings. Each one has their own special charm.
- Classic Guitar – The sound of the classic guitar is softer and warmer. A lot of beginners start with this acoustic, because it is easier on their soft finger tips.
- Steel-String Guitar – The sound of the steel strings is louder and brighter. It is supposedly harder to play on the steel-string guitar, because it involves more strength from your fingers and is more abrasive to the finger tips. But this is nothing major, it is normal to develop calluses while playing guitar. Size
The size of the childrens guitar is very important. You don’t want to buy an acoustic that is too small or too big for your child. But you should also consider that your son or daughter is probably still going to grow in the next couple of months/years. Try to take this into consideration when choosing their acoustic guitar. As a rough estimate, 3/4 sized guitars are good for 6-10 year olds, and 1/2 sized guitars are good for 3-6 year olds. Also be aware that there is a noticeable difference between a 34″ and 36″ 3/4-size guitar, with the former being good for 5-8 year olds and the latter for 6-10 year olds. As I said before, these are only rough estimates. The choice really depends on the height, not the age of the child.
Brand
Yes, dear parent, the brand matters. It all depends on the purpose of the guitar you’re buying for your child. If you want your son or daughter to learn an instrument and have fun, but know that it won’t be anything serious, then I’d suggest sticking to cheaper brands. But if you’re planning something more serious and see your child playing it longer, then I would invest in something more durable. Of course you should consider the fact that they’re going to grow. So you don’t want to spend a lot of money on a guitar that won’t suit your child in a couple of months. On the other hand, a down side of buying cheap guitars is that it may negatively influence the learning process. The guitar might be too hard to play, constantly get out of tune etc. So make sure you have your priorities clear and know the purpose of this investment.
Talking about tuning, it’s very important to purchase a tuner when you buy the guitar, as in the beginning, your child won’t know how to tune their guitar. A guitar that is out of tune can greatly hinder the learning process. So it is wise to invest in one here!
